1. How do you get a High Ranking in Search Engines?
If there is little competition for the Search Terms targeted then high rankings can be achieved by providing good, original and relevant content. And then optimising that content and the Website's structure. (See SEO case study 1). Websites are best built with Search Engines in mind. If there is a lot of established competition for the keywords targeted then it is unlikely a high ranking, for those keywords, will be achieved just by optimising the Website (see SEO case study 2 for a Website involved in a highly competitive industry)

3. How do you optimise a Website?

4. How can I find out what Search Terms to optimise my Website for?
Some market research is best carried out first. This will inform about the competition, and what Search Terms people use when searching for goods, services or information that you want to provide online. Knowing this information allows more effective selection of Search Terms. Needless to say the more popular the terms the harder it will be to get a ranking for them. So it's not always wise to go for the most popular term. An experienced professional can help decide what are the best terms to go for.

5.How long can it take for my Website to appear in Search Engines?
3 - 6 months. On Google sometimes longer. See Submitting to Search Engines for more info.

6. Can I get results quicker?
Yes. Pay Per Click (PPC) can bring traffic to a Website almost immediately. PPC involves paying a search engine for a small add that links to your Website. Each time someone clicks on your add you pay the Search Engine a small fee.

This is an excellent method of advertising because it allows you to clearly see you ROI. Something, which is not always easy to quantify with other methods of advertising. Google's Adwords is an excellent implentation of PPC.

7. Why bother optimising my Website if I can just use Pay Per Click?
PPC costs money. In the long term optimising a Website's content will eventually bring people to a site for free. Thereby allowing less money to be spent on PPC, and other more traditional methods of marketing and advertising.

8. What else can I do to promote / market my Website?
Keep adding good, optimised content. If you haven't yet got a Website then the sooner you do the better. As the length of time a Website has existed is a major factor for Search Engines. In time the Web will be everywhere. The earlier you get in on it the better.

9. Are there any magic tricks that can help me get a high ranking?
No. Anybody who says that there is either inherently dishonest, or very inexperienced, and will damage a venture in the long term. There is no cloak and dagger stuff.

10.Can't I do it myself?
If you are interested in the Web, and willing to learn it will be an interesting project. Though perhaps frustrating at times. There is a lot on information on the Web on how to optimise a Website. It's seperating the wheat from the chaff that's the problem.

11. Why can't you just tell me what to do and I will try to do it myself? You want me to tell you what to do? No problem as long as you pay me first. (-:
