Search Engine FAQs

1.How do you get a High Ranking in Search Engines?

If there is little competition for the Search Terms targeted then it is possible high rankings can be achieved by providing good, original and relevant content. That content has to be optimized for the search terms targeted. The Websites structure has to be constructed to allow easy indexing by search engines. (See SEO case study 1).

If there is a lot of established competition for the keywords targeted then it is unlikely a high ranking, for those keywords, will be achieved just by optimising the Website (see SEO case study 2 for a Website involved in a highly competitive industry)

2.Will getting my Website optimised for Search Engines guarantee my Website gets a high ranking in the major Search Engines?

No i'm afraid not. But optmising a Website will guarantee that Website is a lot easier to find than if it were not optimised.

3.How do you optimise a Website?

Many portray SEO as some sort of mysterious black art. This is nonesense. Google itself provides clear guidelines on most of the important aspects. With more info here

4.How can I find out what Search Terms to optimise my Website for?

Some market research is best carried out first. This will inform about the competition, and what Search Terms people use when searching for goods, services or information that you want to provide online. Knowing this information allows more effective selection of Search Terms. Needless to say the more popular the terms the harder it will be to get a ranking for them. So it's not always wise to go for the most popular term. An experienced professional can help decide what are the best terms to go for.

5.How long can it take for my Website to appear in Search Engines?

3 - 6 months. On Google sometimes longer. See Submitting to Search Engines for more info.

6.Can I get results quicker?

Yes. Pay Per Click (PPC) can bring traffic to a Website almost immediately. PPC involves paying a search engine for a small add that links to your Website. Each time someone clicks on your add you pay the Search Engine a small fee.

This is an excellent method of advertising because it allows you to clearly see you ROI. Something, which is not always easy to quantify with other methods of advertising. Google's Adwords is an excellent implentation of PPC.

7. Why bother optimising my Website if I can just use Pay Per Click?

PPC costs money. In the long term optimising a Website's content will eventually bring people to a site for free. Thereby allowing less money to be spent on PPC, and other more traditional methods of marketing and advertising.

8. What else can I do to promote / market my Website?

Keep adding good, optimised content. If you haven't yet got a Website then the sooner you do the better. As the length of time a Website has existed is a major factor for Search Engines. In time the Web will be everywhere. The earlier you get in on it the better.

About Me (Paul Stewart)

For the past seven years i have been the senior developer for www.whichfranchise.com one of Scotland's most established and successful Internet companies. I have witnessed the power of the Web in helping small companies make achievements that previously were only attainable to larger organisations, who are able to use the more traditional media channels of advertising and communication.

From my base in Glasgow I can provide, to anywhere in the UK, the full spectrum of services needed to get the most out of the Web today. From Web Applications and Websites through to Marketing Advice and Search Engine Optimisation services. All at a cost many times lower than any high street Web Agency.

Websites - which type for you?

I cater for every size of organisation. From the very small to the very large.

Small to Medium Organisation

For smaller businesses a static, template based Website is often all that is required.

Static means the content does not change that often (i.e. every day or week), and therefore does not require any expensive database link up to generate and modify content on a daily or hourly basis.

means the Website is built around a pre-designed template that can be purchased cheaply from the Websites of many talented Graphic Designers.

Using a template is vastly cheaper and quicker than getting a Designer to specifically produce something for you. Don't worry too much that it's not unique. There are so many templates that the chances of you coming across a Website with the same design are very low. A template can also be modified a great deal. E.G. to incorporate a company logo.

Medium to Large Organisation

For larger companies, or perhaps someone who has a complete Internet business opportunity to develop, I can provide sophisticated Database driven Websites and Applications that incorporate the very latest in Web technologies.

If you do require a unique design for your Website then I have access to some of the best Graphic Designers in Glasgow.

Things to Consider before buying a Website

Below are some important points you should consider before starting out on any venture on the Web. I hope they will help you in the initial planning and preparation of your venture. They will also help you get the most out of your site once it is up and running.

Hiring a Web Developer / Designer
If you are not already familiar with the world of Websites then hiring a good Web Developer / Designer can be tricky. Looking at their own Website can help. You should ask is the information on it well presented? Is it easy to navigate? Does it have a consistent look and feel? Does it pay any attention to Accessibility for the disabled, and Web Standards? Do they have any good referrals?

Specification of requirements
You should always come to an agreement with the developer in the form of written, signed contact, as to what the final specification of the website you want will actually be.

Choosing a Domain Name (URL) for your Website
Choosing a domain name that is the address of your Website is extremely important. Imagine you have advertised your URL somewhere on a car, beermat or whatever. You need something that is short and easy to spell. So that people will remember it by the time they get to a PC.

Promoting your Website
If your website is to be of continuing value to your organisation then the promotion of your website is every bit as important as the construction of it.

Search Site Facility
People's time is at a premium. If a browser/potential customer cannot find what he is looking for on your site within the first 30 - 60 seconds, he will move on to your competitor. A good search site facility is a very important tool to allow users to find what they are looking for on your site quickly.
